Creating a Course

Here’s how to create an online course for free in 10 steps:

  1. Choose Your Course Topic
  2. Identify the Target Audience
  3. Gather and Structure Your Knowledge
  4. Create an Online Course Outline
  5. Choose Your Online Course Software or Platform
  6. Create the Course Content
  7. Make Sure Your Content is Engaging
  8. Create a Community for Your Online Course
  9. Gather Feedback for Your Online Course
  10. Adapt, Improve and Update

Be as specific as possible. Don’t try to cover too wide of a topic in your first course.

A common early misconception when creating online courses is that you should create one course per one topic. From a student’s standpoint – that’s a terrible idea. Students get overwhelmed by massive amounts of all-over-the-place information within a single course. And, from a profitability standpoint – that’s an even worse idea.

Focusing on short courses rather than a single huge program enables you to sell larger volumes and to improve upon early iterations. When developing your first course, make sure to leave some room for the future.

These are some questions you should ask yourself when picking a topic for your course:

  • Are you an expert on the topic?
  • Is there enough demand for the topic?
  • How deep will you go into the topic?
Think through these initial steps very carefully. They will be the foundation for the online course you will be building. Without a solid foundation, you course is doomed to fail.

Here’s a tip: instead of trying to guess what students want, go straight to the data. Use tools such as Google Trends to see what type of courses people are searching for. Or, check MOOC websites such as CourseraedX or FutureLearn to see what courses are already popular. Here is more in depth learning for creating courses

Creating The Course

There are lots of different ways to create your courses. It can be a simple as this one which is simply some text and pictures. Upgrade it with some videos from experts or make your own.

Your own videos can be filmed on a mobile phone, or with professional camera equipment or you can capture the screen like a lot of my how to courses. I use a program called Camtasia however there are also many free ones around. If you have an old computer load Ubuntu by Linux on it as there are many screen capture programs on it as well.

You can buy already made courses and edit them as your own, add more content and intersperse your own videos and content. Set up a whole training bundle etc. I have a whole bunch here.

Also one of the best ways to see how to make your own courses is to download some and see how they do it. Mine all are under $7

Make Your Own

You can interview experts. Programs like Zoom have made this so easy to record a conversation with experts.

Create a set of slides and then narrate them as seen in the above video.

There are so many different ways you can create online course but remember make it specific and and make it fun and interesting.
